• University practice: how to make the day worthwhile

Opening day is not just an opportunity for students; they also provide knowledge to university families. But parents should not try to "regain their youth," said James Busson, director of student work at Sheffield University. Instead, they were there to support the role, helping students learn about college.

So how can you make the most of every day?

First, it's best to plan and do research. "She's also a student ambassador," said Rebecca Hansom, 20, a student at Sheffield Hallam University.

University guides, like the University Medical Guide, can help you narrow down your options, but once you've decided where you want to go, certain search engines will make you a good day. Hansom said it could include: search engines and car searches; the time and place for the talks, trips, and shops you want to visit; downloading a campus map; and create a list of questions. "Not surprisingly, many families come to open days without a plan and, as a result, do not get much," he said.

Expect introductory lectures and special lectures on the course, as well as the option of continuing to visit an educational institution, student union, or hostel - but you don't seem to be a "scheduler," he said. Richard Harvey, an accredited academic at the University of East Anglia (UAE). "It's important to have fun, travel and appreciate this place." As you walk around, talk to the students. They are "less careful" about what they say about universities and local areas, said Karen Packham, a longtime mentor and parent with her two daughters.

Says Busson: "Working with student agencies at the forums and asking questions," Busson said, "even finding a place to find the best fish and rice."

the open day, said many university communities have social media accounts where they can answer questions.

When it comes to questions today, parents play an important role. "It helps boys or girls] see the big picture and think about reality," Packham said, advising parents to encourage young people to think about practical things like money. But that's not important. "One of the side benefits [of going to the open day] is that he spends a lot of time with my daughter," Packham said.

Busson had the heart to say, however: "Parents are there to support [the students] and not the leaders." And Morton says that "they're always parents," which doesn't help.

Above all, open days should be fun for everyone. "This is not a competitive event," Harvey said. "Don't put yourself through the pressure of looking at everything. It should be a fun day."
